Though Black people were freed from slavery, we carried a lot of the same enslaving mindsets that was perpetuated on us. Some of us remained docile, hating the color of our skin and rejecting the lineage of our ancestors. As a whole, we struggle to recognize that our lives matter just as much as the other and that we, too, are worthy of a life lived fruitfully. The lie is that we come from heathens and savages, which is far removed from the truth that excellence that came from out of our community, historically and presently: our music, our food, our dance, our culture is all divine and beautiful. Knowing this will free our minds from the shackles of slavery and help us to realize our worth.
As children of God, we must not allow the lies that were told to us restrain our gifts from being exercised. We must reclaim our history and know the truth. Some people just might not be ready for what we have to offer, but it doesn’t make what we have less valuable. We are enough, just as we are and recognizing this will give us freedom in living without apology and going forth to reclaim and realize our God-given worth.
